Sunday School

“He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom….” (St. Luke 4:16)

Why is it that all Lutheran Churches have more in attendance for worship than they do for Sunday School? Through the last couple of years, we have averaged between 40-50 in Sunday School but in worship it has been just over three times that figure.

May I be so bold as to ask: “Do we not go to Sunday School because we feel we know enough?” Can you tell me (without looking) the answers to the following questions:

1] What books make up the Gospels?
2] How many books are in the Old Testament? New Testament?
3] Which testament will you find the book of Philemon?
4] According to Jesus, what two commandments are the greatest?
5] Where do you find the creation story?

Now—if you missed more than one, you need to be in Sunday School. These are pretty basic questions! And there are two offerings for adults along (David Herting and Becky Whitlock, teachers) with Pastor’s class every other Sunday evening at 6 p.m. (beginning September 16). If you have children or grandchildren, there’s something for each one of them! Our teachers are great!

When I was young, I went to Sunday School every Sunday; I can’t say that I ever missed one single confirmation class (three years!) either. It’s interesting that I have trouble remembering a number of my elementary and high school teachers, but for some reason I can remember Mr. O’Brien, Mrs. Hood, Mrs. Frank, Mrs. Leskoff, and Mrs. Smith. Now, why is that? Maybe it was the subject matter that they taught. Pastor Paul Haffly was my confirmation teacher. There must have been something special about those classes that I attended all those years. Don’t you think so?

It was Jesus’ custom to be at the synagogue every Sabbath. It must have been important to Him; it should be important to us, unless by some miraculous thing we have come to know everything! Ha! Come and enjoy the hour (out of the 167 other hours of the week) of fellowship and study of God’s Word. Wow! We can still learn something new!

This Sunday, September 9 is “Rally Sunday.” Come and visit at 10 a.m. for a great opening and then join us for a Bible-oriented “Wax Museum” where you can learn firsthand the eight great Bible stories we’re going to learn about this year! Refreshments too! Blessings!

God loves you and so do I!

Pastor Jim
